XCMG Rescuing Residence in Nairobi, Kenya

December 19, 2014

A residential building in Nairobi, Kenya collapsed at 3 o’clock in the early morning on Dec. 17th. XCMG voluntarily sent rescuing equipments to the site of accident as soon as received the news.

Around 6 o’clock, Kenya National Youth Service Team, Disaster Relief Center, and The Red Cross arrived at the site and rescued 7 persons. The collapsed building had only one entrance, and the floor slab was very heavy, making the rescuing work extremely difficult. Heard about the situation, XCMG Kenya Branch reacted quickly and sent out a truck crane to help with the rescue.

“We receive a call at around 9:30, and then we immediately checked our equipments, formed an 8-person rescuing team, and arrived at the site of accident before 10:00. The standard weight of the crane we provided is 50 ton and is the largest one in Kenya. Besides, we prepared an excavator which can be used whenever necessary” said Mr. Zhang Yuanxiang, General Manager of XCMG Kenya Branch.

The crane provided by XCMG weights 42 ton with a dimension of 12-meter long and 2.5-meter wide. As the collapsed building was in a residential area, the rescuing space was very restricted. In addition, the ground was so sloppy that the crane sank at first and the workers had to put sleepers under the equipment to change operating angles so as to ensure the operation.

Just before the publishing of this report, the crane had lifted the first floor slab and rescued one person.

Mr. Zhang Yuanxiang told the reporter that, “The rescue team were very grateful that XCMG could send a crane to the site. Chinese and African are brothers, whenever there is difficulty, Chinese enterprises will shoulder the social responsibility without hesitation”. “We are very happy that Chinese enterprise could provide us with rescuing equipments. Many equipments that we brought here ourselves are also made in China. They have made the rescue task easier” said the director of Kenya Disaster Relief Center.

By the time of the report, the accident has caused 1 death, and 4 severely wounded. 11 people were rescued. The rescuing task is still in progress.
